Attended a meeting between the SFWMD and Florida higher education establishments at the Lee Campus of Edison Community College. For details see:

Made a presentation to the other interns about the IMP. Received well, even by those who will be involved in the project in a number of months.
Proceeded with the writing of document, including the relevant backgrounds, objectives and budget outlines.
Organized School Board presentation for the 28th of August.
The IMP has continued to oscillate in its progression. Negative aspects include the slow progression of the document, and some lack of cooperation and the difficulty of arranging suitable meetings soon enough. It is envisioned that it will be completed before long however.
Intern seminar series
The Intern seminar on 13 August was, due to a number of factors, a far better affair altogether when compared with the first presentation. The first factor which enabled this was the change of setting into the larger room at Dallas Townsend Agricultural Center. Unlike the first ISS the meeting was spacious, suitable for food consumption, and was not cramped. Everyone could observe the presentation successfully and there was a good response.
Food allocation was somewhat easier with the purchase of more suitable provisions including cans of drink instead of bottles and more easily divided sandwiches. The food was served with considerable ease in comparison to the previous meeting.
Using an overhead projector instead of the valuable and easily broken PowerPoint projector was no major difficulty and relieved the occasion of a 3000 dollar liability, and made as a result made the SDS interns less of a menace in the eyes of the people at Dallas Townsend.
It is likely that the Intern Seminar Series will continue to be a successful affair especially with the drawing up of guidelines for (quiet and cheap) food puchases. The amount of time preparing for the seminars (food purchase, setting up etc) has been drastically reduced and should be expected to take no longer than 45 minutes.
Overall, a far better organized and executed occasion with few problems.

Successful Rotary Club presentation. Useful follow up with Larry Hall of FCB, who said he would arrange for a letter of support from the Rotary Club.

Again the mentorship proposal has been a somewhat stop-start affair, due to the difficulty of gaining any feedback from LaBelle High School, or the School Board. This would help infinitely with the writing of the proposal. Plus points however have included the Rotary Club presentation, its follow up and the progression of some parts of the document.
Intern seminar series
Proceeded with the organizations for next seminars. Whilst the first seminar (Thiago Faraco's) on the 30th July was a somewhat ramshackle affair, there were plenty of aspects to learn from, including the need for a change in the choice of food, and especially the venue. The actual presentation was useful however and there is a lot of potential for the intern seminar series. Despite difficulties of scheduling the meetings, in terms of large hall availability on Mondays, and intern specifics, the ISS will be a hugely worthwhile venture. A change of venue from the small to large conference room after the tenure of this report iterates this. A useful addition may be to set aside 10 minutes at the end of the seminar to discuss a predetermined topic, about a particular issue, such as race, social systems, economics or other potentially hugely interesting discussions. The interns could be asked to think about these issues beforehand. This would encourage interns' to discuss 'higher social topics'

Mentorship proposal:
Worked with Kelle Greenleaf on various aspects of the mentorship proposal. Undertakings included (amongst others):
Gained familiarization with the wider aspects of the proposal, such as political background, social conditions, economics and others.
Produced a backdrop setting for the final proposal based on relevant aspects of the social and educational aims of the CERP.
Set up a database for contacts.
Started a budget outline for the proposal.
Produced a PowerPoint presentation for adaption to future 'talks' to community leaders and other influences.
Whilst the proposal has been rather stop and start in places, with a few setbacks along the way, a large amount of the background and basis work has been accomplished. What is required now is a need to develop community backing, and to discuss technicalities with the high school, the school board and others; creating a situation where there is a competent building of support. Then there can be a concentration of energies onto the SFWMD- the final target.
Intern seminar series
Structured the composition of the project, including its aims and constitutions. Outlined the plans to interns through e-mails and website. Used web page to schedule meetings. Assisted with organizing the first meetings and the location. Supported Thiago Silva during the construction of his presentation in structure and emphasis.
Whilst there had been some setbacks in arranging the initial meetings, it is envisaged that regular (i.e. weekly) seminars will soon become the norm, as the project gains momentum, interns gain familiarity with the project and the potential pool of available interns increases, assisted by regular departures from mid-late August.
Lunchtime meetings
Organized and co-ordinated lunchtime meetings. Reminded individual intern by e-mail and verbally each morning. Created a schedule webpage at:

The success of a meetings depends on the individual intern, the circumstances and the particular day. Overall the aims of the project, have been realized with the (perhaps inevitable?) side effect of familiarization.

Read through ASCE and III documents. Became accustomed to the content, but remained undecided with how to proceed with restructuring of the articles and the other documents. More meetings and discussion required before progress can be achieved.
