My Home Town: Hastings, England

    Hastings, yesterday

Hastings is a town of 80,000 people on the south coast of England, 65 miles south east of London. Most people will have heard of it through the year 1066, when a Saxon guy called Harold stupidly got an arrow in his eye enabling a French bloke called William (subsequently the 'Conqueror') to change the course of history forever. Despite the fact that this was in a field about 7 miles to the north east of Hastings in a place now rather unimaginatively called "Battle", Hastings has basked in the glory as a result. Since then the major historical events include; an invention which the Americans took on board wholeheartedly, by John Logie Baird (not bear), named 'television' (see your front room); numerous violent storms; a Victorian renaissance (well seaside resort) and many others.

Its contemporary claims to fame include it being the sunniest place in the UK, having the steepest railway in Britain and the only beach-based fishing fleet in the country. As a local (or a 'native' as the Americans would term it), I've lived hear all my life for twenty-one years. Which is nice. And I can say I probably wouldn't have changed that (honestly !). As well as being next to the sea, it has an Old Town which looks like it has been transported from another era (except of course the Escort XR3is), a castle (wall?), a pier, amazing countryside on its doorstep, has a unique disheveled character, and, unlike Florida, has lots of hills which provides pretty good views. People slag Hastings off for the worst unemployment rates in the southeast of England, bad transport links and the run down aura of much of its previously architectural glory. But this adds to its appeal. It has a unique, unkempt, scruffy charm, with many glimmers of improvement (rather like me). And that is always interesting.

So if you want to change your holiday vacation plans from the Maldives to Hastings, or would like to move here permanently check out these links, and you'll learn even more about this great home town of mine.
