Ronald Hellriegel
student intern at Southern DataStream
from 6/3/2000-9/29/2000

From the 3rd of June 2000 until the 29th of September I was working as a student intern for Southern DataStream.  I am a student in business and engineering at the University of Technology in Dresden, majoring in microelectronics and  information technologies.  The work on the Palm project was a challenging task.  The internship has been a great experience and I am proud to  leave my internship with a product for the specialized market of environmental data acquisitions.

The Company

Founded in 1999  by Dr. John C. Capece, Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering, Southern DataStream is a provider of agricultural engineering, water management, and water quality services.  Specialized in monitoring equipment, data collection and analysis, the company also provides Internet web page services for public-access or confidential project management needs.

The Projects

My main project was the development of a soft and hardware solution to access the collected and stored data from the Stage Logger, a data logger product of Southern DataStream using the Palm PDA.  An additional goal is the use of the Palm for data retrieval from data loggers of the most common brands at the market.

With Beatriz Costa I developed a complete solution for a internet broadcasted weather station at the Oxbow hotel and golf course.  The weather station collects the outside conditions and transmits it via radio signals to the home office.  There is no real time transmission of the data to the internet yet.  Hopefully an intern will take on this task and develop something to  publish the weather data on the Oxbow golf club web page.

Southern DataStream is a part of the LaBelle community in Hendry county, Florida.  The interns and employees spend some of their working time to give computer classes to the K-12 students at Youth training  in the Health department.
